BiographyI am Horticulturist by profession holding Bachelors (1990-1995, JKUAT - Kenya), Masters (1997-199, UWS - Australia) and Ph.D (2000-2005, JKUAT - Kenya) degrees. I have taught Horticulture in the Department of Horticulture since 1996 as Teaching Assistant (1996-2000), Tutorial Fellow (2000-2005), Lecturer (2005-2010), Senior lecturer (2010-2014) and Associate Professor (2014 to date). I have held several positions of responsibility while working at JKUAT including Halls Warden (2003 – 2004), Director of Alumni and International Students (2008-2009) and Director of Performance Contracting and Appraisal (2009 – Todate).
I have been actively involved in the profession of horticulture through the Horticultural Association of Kenya (HAK) where I have been a member since 1999 and have served as Vice Chairman (2005-2007) and Chairman (2007-2011, 2015 to date). As a member and official of HAK, I have organized several workshops to discuss various topics in Horticulture. I have also been involved in the publication of the African Journal of Horticultural Science (AJHS - url: http://www.hakenya.net/ajhs/index.php/ajhs ). I am also a member of the International Society for Horticultural Sciences (ISHS).
As a Director of Performance Contracting and Appraisal at my University, I am involved in performance management and evaluation. I am therefore involved in evaluation of implementation of the university strategy and achievement of planned outcomes. This has exposed me to the higher education developments in the country and its alignment to national development. As a coordinator of DIES training course on management of internationalization, I have been exposed to topical issues in higher education globally.
Additional skills acquired through short term training and working include Quality Management System Auditing, Performance management and Monitoring & Evaluation, and Scientific and Technical Writing. I have great passion for Information Technology which has enabled me to gain a lot of skills and experience. I can competently use various computer applications including: Word processing packages (e.g. MS word, word perfect), spreadsheets (e.g. MS Excel), Database (e.g. MS Access), Presentation software (MS Powerpoint), Desktop publishing (MS Publisher), Statistical Softwares (SPSS, Genstat, SAS, COSTAT, SigmaPlot), Modeling software (Modelmaker, Stella, Simile), Photo Editing software (MS photo-Editor, Paint) among others. I have also designed some websites.
Management of institutional and staff performance in public sector (University) including designing performance metrics.
