This brief article (link below) by Cornell management and economics professor Robert H. Frank in the April 22, 2016 Chronical Review is about the role of chance and luck in our professional and personal lives. Frank writes about events that took place early in his academic career that put him on the path toward achieving status in his field. But things could have easily gone in a different direction. The article prompted our Equity Community of Practice (CoP) to reflect on how chance and luck have led us to where we are today. We are also planning to ask our students to reflect on the same question - how has luck contributed to where you are today? The hope is that we will each more fully realize that, though hard work and talent are contributors to achievement, chance and luck also contribute in substantial ways. And some people have not experienced much luck. How does that help to shape our views of equity?
