'''Learning Studio 131'''

Each of the Learning Studios and the Project Laboratory is uniquely designed to be flexible for all types of activities. The furniture in each space has wheels and can be re-configured for collaborative work, individualized activity centers, learning pods, etc. Seating arrangements can be altered to any degree necessary, allowing for the ideal experimental learning environment.
131 is DLRC’s largest Learning Studio, with a capacity of up to 84 individuals at a time. There are 9 “pods” of 3 tables, with each table seating 3 comfortably.
This Learning Studio is equipped with the same classroom technology that can be found in most of Purdue’s learning areas: PC station (accessible with your Purdue ID), a DVD player, and a laptop VGA connection to plug in your laptop. These are all connected to 2 projection units that can project on 2 screens at the front of the room. Each projector is capable of projecting independently of the other. This allows you to project, for example, your laptop as well as the PC simultaneously, one on each screen.
In addition to the typical technologies, you will have access to microphones for voice amplification. You and your students can be equipped to address the entire room without straining your vocal cords or worrying about whether everyone can hear what is being said.
Included with the classroom technology is a SmartPodium. The SmartPodium is a computer monitor that allows you to use an attached pen to mark up any media that you can bring up on the classroom PC. For example, if you wish to highlight some areas in a web browser, SmartInk will allow you to use the pen to circle areas of interest or highlight text. It can be used with Powerpoint to circle areas of an image to help you get your point across. SmartPodium can also be used in conjunction with the SmartNotebook software to let you demonstrate to your class how to use a Smartboard. The DLRC has 7 Smartboards that can be reserved for your classroom use. Because the SmartPodium allows you to demonstrate to your class, you can give precise instruction and avoid confusion with this particular technology that your students may not have experience using.
Should you wish to connect your classroom to another site, Adobe Connect can be used with the Polycom unit in this Learning Studio to create a portal to other classrooms, scientists across the globe, or to video conference a presentation by an expert. Create a virtual field trip. Let your students present to other classes to solidify learning for all the students participating. By using Adobe Connect with Polycom, superior audio quality over the internet is easily achieved. These are just a couple of ways your classroom can be given a gateway to new learning experiences that might not otherwise be possible.
DLRC houses 6 remote-controlled cameras and wireless microphones for HD recording of your classroom. This technology is at the cutting edge of video acquisition. The cameras are mounted to the grid above the Learning Studio. This creates as little intrusion to your classroom as possible. The cameras can be moved throughout the room to capure nearly every possible angle. The omni-directional microphones allow for exceptional capture of voices, even in this large space. The recording suite is all-digital. Because it is all-digital, you can receive your recording as a file almost immediately following your class or workshop. No waiting for tape to be captured and rendered before you start working with your footage.
If you have any questions regarding the technology in Learning Studio 131, please email Emily Carter at ecarter@purdue.edu. She would love to talk with you about how DLRC technology can help you create an extraordinary experience!
