Fun activity, great resource. Unfortunately my students were unable to handle the activity this year. Maybe next year will be a more positive experience!

This was a great design activity. It really helped the students understand potential energy, kinetic energy, force, gravity, and several other science terms. They loved the hands-on part of actually building the roller coaster. It was surprising to see some students step up as leaders. Grouping them was a little bit of a challenged, but they managed within the groups ok. This activity is definitely one I will continue to use.

As a math teacher, I very much appreciated the amount of math incorporated into this design. Being able to teach the Math concept prior to the Science classes doing the actual design worked very well! The Science/Math connection has been made better than any collaborative effort that we ever made before. Due to this, I feel there will be much more communication. Jo Goodrich

This activity is great! My students loved the freedom to develop their own coaster and they really connected with where on the coaster there was potential and kinetic energy! The lesson plans were easy to follow and they transitioned well. On thing I noted was that although there was a lot of commotion going on, the commotion was on task and relevant. It was an excellent way to culminate our PE/KE unit. I cannot wait to try it again this year after experience under my belt!

Excellent design activity to demonstrate understanding of potential and kinetic energy. Lesson plans were teacher friendly and needed virtually no modifications. Students were totally engaged throughout the lesson. Highly recommend to any sixth grade teacher using Standard 4 — design.
