What are Treatments for Narcolepsy?

Narcolepsy is treated with drugs and lifestyle changes. Modalert, including modafinil, is routinely prescribed. Modalert promotes wakefulness and alertness to reduce daytime sleepiness, a hallmark of narcolepsy. Although its mechanism is unknown, it appears to impact brain chemicals that regulate sleep-wake cycles. Modalert is taken once a day in the morning, however dosage may be affected by response and tolerance. In addition to medicine, lifestyle changes like regular sleep schedules, brief daytime naps, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine before bedtime can help manage narcolepsy symptoms. Narcolepsy patients should collaborate with their doctors to create a customized treatment strategy.
