Faculty ProAction for Equity

On June 14-16, three members of our STEM Faculty Community of Practice (CoP) in Equity and Privilege -- Fatma Mili (our CoP facilitator), Guity Ravai, and Willy Burgess Daniels -- attended and presented at the annual Women in Engineering ProActive Network (WEPAN) Forum in Broomfield, CO. Their talk centered on the formation and development of the Equity CoP, influences from outside speakers and books, the self-reflection that members are doing regarding equity and teaching, and strategies for the near future. The slideshow is found at the link above.

"Do You Know How Lucky You Are?" by Robert H. Frank

In this brief essay in the April 22, 2016 Chronicle Review, Cornell management and economics professor Robert H. Frank challenges the reader to think about the role of luck and chance in their life and career path. Frank uses examples from his early academic career to show how luck played a pivotal role in helping him to achieve status. But it could have easily gone in a different direction.

How has luck/chance played a role in where we are today? What about people around us who don't seem to experience favorable luck? Is it mostly hard work and talent that opens doors, or is there more to achievement and getting ahead? What do these questions have to do with equity?

The Difference: How the Power of Diversity Creates Better Groups, Firms, Schools, and Societies

From the author - “Diversity, as characterized in the book, means differences in how people see, categorize, understand, and go about improving the world. I should hasten to add that the book’s emphasis on cognitive diversity and the pragmatic benefits of diversity does not deny other dimensions of diversity.”
