LASER-CGDV Colombia Hackathon Results
LASER PULSE, in collaboration with QED, Data Elevates, Tableau, and the USAID Mission in Colombia, is pleased to announce the winners of our data visualization hackathon. The past few months have shown us the added importance of data analysis and data visualization in international development, and we want to thank everyone who participated in this event; the feedback from the judges was very positive in terms of their overall impression of the submissions, particularly the top finalists and the winning 3 teams.
The winning team is "Why Women Code" from the University of Notre Dame, with an outstanding data visualization entitled "A Staggering Exodus into Colombia" -- congratulations to team members Yun Yan, Yunqi He, Weiyi Zhao, and Zhijing Zhao !!! All four of these talented women are pursuing graduate degrees from the Mendoza College of Business at Notre Dame.
In second place is "Grupo Migración y Salud de la Universidad del Norte" with a data visualization entitled "La Migración Me Quedo o Me Voy?" -- congratulations to Melissa Aguirre and Laura Bonilla !!! Melissa is a Master’s student in the Public Health Department at Universidad del Norte, and will be graduating in July of this year. Laura graduated with a degree in Epidemiology from the Universidad Industrial de Santander, and is currently working for Universidad del Norte.
The third place team is "Scope Consulting" from Purdue University, with a data visualization entitled "Eder and the Venezuelan Migration Crisis" -- congratulations to Alexandre Vives and Jose Berrizbeitia !!! Both Alex and Jose are Juniors in the Industrial Engineering program at Purdue.
Due to the corona virus situation disrupting university functions, we are unfortunately unable to present the awards at a live ceremony as originally planned at Purdue (with simulcast in Colombia). Therefore, the event organizers will make other arrangements to mail the awards to the winners, or deliver them in person in cases where it is possible to do so.
Thanks again to all who participated in the event, and to all who have taken the time to view the data visualizations submitted. Please be sure to visit the LASER PULSE and CGDV websites regularly to check for upcoming hackathons. CGDV conducts hackathons often, and LASER PULSE plans to do so again in conjunction with future initiatives targeting different international development themes in USAID-operating countries.
