Abstract
This material was presented at pre-conference workshop 4 on November 12, 2015, at the 2015 AAC&U Crossing Boundaries: Transforming STEM Education Conference in Seattle, Washington. The workshop, entitled Transforming Institutions: 21st-Century Undergraduate STEM Education, was conducted by James Lehman and Wilella Burgess of the Discovery Learning Research Center at Purdue University; Gabriela Weaver, Vice Provost for Faculty Development at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst; and Linda Slakey, professor and dean emeritus at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and senior fellow AAC&U/PKAL and AAU.
Higher education is increasingly challenged to prepare students for life and work in the 21st-Century, particularly careers in STEM. While a substantial amount is known about course and curricular transformation, much less is known about how to bring about institutional change. Achieving sustainable institutional transformation around the widespread adoption of evidence-based teaching practices is not a simple process. Emerging models for institutional transformation utilize best practices from diverse fields. This workshop summarized the current state of higher education STEM systemic reform efforts and engaged the audience in suggesting next steps in the path toward institutional transformation.
