Tusome: Case Study of Kenya’s Early Grade Reading Program and the Journey to Self-Reliance

Logo

Tusome PhotoWe at LASER PULSE are excited to announce the completion of our first project, an evaluation of Kenya’s Tusome early grade reading program. Tusome, which means, “Let’s Read” in Kiswahili, has improved literacy levels for over 7 million Kenyan children in Grades 1-3 by distributing over 24 million learning materials and supporting over 70,000 Kenyan teachers.

USAID, DFID, and RTI International worked with the Kenyan Ministry of Education toward successful completion and transition of the program.

Makerere University, the University of Nairobi, and Catholic Relief Services, in partnership with Purdue University and USAID, completed the evaluation of Tusome focusing on the scaling up of the program and eventual transition to ownership by the Kenyan government. The findings will inform future USAID programming in education, scale, and the journey to self-reliance.

If you have interest in learning about early grade education in Kenya, scaling education programming, or in sustainability and transition, please see the Tusome materials for additional information: https://stemedhub.org/groups/laserpulse/resexchange/tusome.
