From India to New York and Beyond: Strength in the Face of Adversity
Padma Lakshmi hails from Chennai (formerly Madras) in India, but she arrived in the United States at age four, taking up residence in New York City with her family. Eventually, she relocated across the country to Los Angeles where she attended high school. There she felt the pressures of not only teenage life but also of being the target of racial and cultural aggression.
Padma found herself also facing medical adversity upon being diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a condition that results in a severe reaction to infection.
