Post-Doctoral Research Associate

Evaluation of Accelerated Education Models in a Post-Conflict Zone

Evaluation and Learning Research Center

Purdue University

Lafayette, IN

Purdue’s Evaluation and Learning Research Center (ELRC) is seeking a postdoctoral research associate with interest and experience in educational research in an international development context to join our team. The position is available 9/1/2019 – 10/30/2023. The ELRC, housed in Purdue University’s College of Education, conducts research and evaluation focused on innovations that improve learning, well-being and personal or organizational development. ELRC is nationally and internationally recognized for its people and context centered approach to research and evaluation and for designing and executing rigorous, ethical and inclusive research and evaluation studies.

The ELRC works effectively across disciplines and professions to apply social science theories and methods to evaluate innovations in education and organizational development. Currently, the ELRC has three primary focal areas: innovations in P-12 STEM education, innovations and institutional change in post-secondary teaching and learning, and capacity building for learning and strategic action in domestic and international development contexts. The Center’s work in international development contexts is a distinct growth area.

This position is suitable to post-doctoral researchers with interest in exploring the efficacy of educational models in an international development context. The incumbent will primarily contribute to a USAID-funded project aimed at extending the evidence base for Accelerated Education Programs (AEPs) by understanding the relative effectiveness of various AEP pilot models (or components of models), factors that influence scalability, as well as effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of AEP at scale.  More specifically, the postdoctoral research associate will work with a team of domestic and international researchers and practitioners on a project aimed at: (1) identifying the most effective and cost-efficient models of delivering accelerated education programs in a post-conflict zone (East Africa), focusing on learning outcomes, equitable access, and retention for all students, particularly the most vulnerable; (2) measuring the results of the full program implementation, (3) measuring the cost effectiveness of the program (for pilot models and scaled-up models); and (4) capturing the lessons learned for scale (for pilot models, and scaled-up models).

Interested post-doctoral researchers will benefit from the center’s credibility and large project portfolio to apply and enhance their training. The postdoctoral research associate will be an integral part of the ELRC. Although primarily focusing on a single large project, ELRC’s large and diverse portfolio provides opportunities for learning, contribution, and collaboration across a wide array of project types. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work with ELRC staff to: 1) collaborate with domestic and international partners and the federal funding agency to design, execute and communicate comprehensive, contextually appropriate and, culturally responsive evaluation of accelerated education models in a post-conflict zone; 2) track project progress, coordinate data collection and analysis, develop project reports and other deliverables (3) identify, plan, and publish original scholarly communication related to the Center’s mission, goals and work. The successful candidate will:

  • Possess an earned doctorate in education, social science, statistics, or other relevant field and a broad understanding of educational and social science research, methods and theories.
  • Have strong technical skill and experience in quantitative evaluation and research methods.
  • Have strong interest and experience in international development.
  • Function as a positive contributor in a fast paced, collaborative, team environment.
  • Be welcoming to collaboration on research and evaluation projects and open to learning new skills, content, and approaches.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and professionalism as a collegial team member
  • Demonstrate strong oral, written, and graphical communication skills
  • Possess knowledge of Human Subjects Research Protection processes and procedures and a commitment to ethical, inclusive and culturally-responsive research and evaluation
  • Have some familiarity with international development, post-conflict zone education, accelerated education, or other international education activities.
  • Possess curiosity, interest in continued learning, and self-motivation

The ELRC encourages a collaborative environment and is the home of a dynamic team of professional staff and graduate students. The postdoctoral research associate will be supported and mentored by ELRC staff to create a professional development plan that supports their personal and professional development.
